North Carolina has no stand-alone memory-care license. A community that markets memory care should appear on DHSR's SCU listing; if it does not, its dementia residents are living in the general adult care home setting. That is the single most useful check a family can make.

A licensed Special Care Unit must meet added rules on top of the adult care home license: a secured environment, staff with dementia-specific training, staffing levels set for the unit, activity programming for residents with cognitive impairment, and a written disclosure statement describing the unit's services and admission and discharge criteria.
