Every state-licensed senior care provider in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Union and Iredell counties, from North Carolina DHSR's public records.

The largest licensed adult care homes in the metro, each profiled from its DHSR record.
One state division licenses all of them: the NC Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR), part of NCDHHS. Its Adult Care Licensure Section licenses adult care homes (10A NCAC 13F) and family care homes (10A NCAC 13G); its Nursing Home Licensure and Certification Section licenses nursing homes (10A NCAC 13D), which CMS also certifies.
Home care agencies and hospices are DHSR-licensed too. Verify any provider on the DHSR facility search and, for nursing homes, Medicare Care Compare.
In North Carolina both are delivered under the same DHSR adult care home license; memory care is a Special Care Unit (SCU) inside a licensed adult care home with extra staffing, dementia training and disclosure rules, not a separate license.
| Assisted living (adult care home) is… | Memory care (SCU) is… | |
|---|---|---|
| License | Adult Care Home (10A NCAC 13F) or Family Care Home (10A NCAC 13G), DHSR Adult Care Licensure Section | The same adult care home license — memory care is a Special Care Unit (SCU) inside it, not a separate license |
| Who it serves | Adults who need help with bathing, dressing, medications and supervision | Residents with Alzheimer's or another dementia who need a secured unit and dementia-trained staff |
| What it is not | Not skilled nursing — no 24-hour licensed nursing care (that is a nursing home, 10A NCAC 13D) | Not a nursing home either; it is not a locked psychiatric unit and not a separate memory-care license |
| Staffing rules | Minimum aide staffing by shift under 13F/13G | Added SCU staffing, dementia training and a written disclosure statement families should read |
| Typical 2026 cost | $4,200-$5,800/mo | $5,400-$7,200/mo |
| How to verify | DHSR facility search: license, star rating, inspections, penalties | DHSR Special Care Unit listing shows how many beds are licensed for SCU care |
